Health, Safety, and Security

Our basic philosophy on safety

It goes without saying that the COMSYS Group’s top priorities are safety, security and reliability.
Based on these prerequisites, we value (1) ensuring that the prioritization of safety and quality takes root as a part of our corporate culture and that this is preserved no matter how the situation or environment changes, (2) the proactive introduction of tools and safety devices to ensure a safe work environment and (3) the continued and correct use of tools and equipment. Reexamining these three points when necessary so they are not reduced to a formality, we will transform them and implement the PDCA cycle.

Change in the frequency of industrial accidents

The COMSYS Group is committed to the elimination of industrial accidents. Nippon COMSYS Corporation, a supervisory business company, has stayed below the industry’s average in terms of both the industrial accident frequency rate*1 and severity rate.*2
We regularly analyze the causes of accidents and take thorough measures to prevent their recurrence so that tragic accidents are not repeated.

  1. *1Frequency rate: The number of casualties from work-related accidents and injuries in one million work hours and indicates the frequency of occurrence of accidents and injuries. Method of calculation: (Number of casualties due to industrial accidents ÷ actual gross working hours) x 1,000,000
  2. *2Severity rate: The number of lost-workdays per thousand actual total working hour, which indicates the severity of the injuries. Method of calculation: (Total number of workdays lost ÷ actual gross working hours) x 1,000

Initiatives

Safety Patrol

We have meetings before the start of work every day and also conduct safety patrols to check the safety of worksites. The goal of safety patrols is to detect potential hazards at an early stage and prevent accidents.
The patrols include looking to see that workers are properly wearing protective gear and observing work procedures, inspecting equipment and checking details.
We also establish monitoring centers to visualize safety using networked on-site cameras. By combining real-time monitoring with the examination of saved videos, we efficiently control worksite safety.
The introduction of monitoring centers makes it possible to quickly eliminate unsafe factors on worksites and they contribute to the improvement of safety.

Safety education

All employees working on site receive regular safety training. The goal of this is to keep the entire workforce, including new employees, up to date on the latest safety information. These training activities vary widely from the observation of basic safety rules to training programs using the latest technologies.
Examples include hazard experience training using VR technology that enables users to experience potential on-site hazards as if they are real, and road safety guidance based on data recorded using in-vehicle cameras. This enables workers to learn about specific safety measures suitable for their actual work environment.
Furthermore, we increase workers' safety awareness using examples from past accidents that occurred within COMSYS and at other companies. We continually update safety measures based on the latest information and we are committed to never allowing an accident to recur. When an accident has occurred, we work to thoroughly elucidate its underlying causes based on the principles behind basic behaviors and discuss measures to prevent accidents.
Furthermore, rules and points to pay attention to are indicated on worksites to prevent the recurrence of accidents.

Safety competitions and safety and health council meetings

To instill an awareness of safety, security and reliability in each employee, companies of the COMSYS Group hold monthly meetings of their safety and health councils and they hold regular safety competitions.
Safety competitions start with a safety lecture by the president or organizational chief of a company, followed by the sharing of good safety practices from different worksites and the commendation of the team leaders of subcontractors with good safety practices. All attendees say their safety slogan in unison at the end of the competition.

Acquisition of Certification

We have acquired occupational safety and health management system (OSHMS) and construction occupational health and safety management system (COHSMS) certifications to thoroughly manage safety.
Even the companies that have yet to acquire any of these certifications have their own original systems for safety management to ensure the safety of their staff.

Initiatives to ensure quality

Multiple offices have acquired quality management system (QMS) certifications and operate their quality management systems to continue to improve their targets and issues.
We engage in efforts including kaizen (improvement) activities, participation in skill competitions, the management of work processes using construction systems and the introduction of image inspection systems in the Carrier-Related Business with the goals of enhancing product quality and preventing human-caused failures.
Nippon COMSYS Corporation, a supervisory business company, conducts a self-check of our branches and organizations around the country. In principle, safety management starts at our worksites. Organizations close to the branches and other site offices conduct operational inspections.
The goal is to prevent accidents and violations of laws and increase safety on worksites by ensuring that detected on-site problems (indicators of accidents) and improvements are reflected in the construction division’s safety processes (PDCA). Considering the tendencies and weaknesses of each organization, our inspection activities prioritize high-risk sites where serious accidents may occur. As soon as a safety problem is detected, improvement guidance is given. Good practices that should enhance the quality of safety measures are shared horizontally nationwide.
The head office’s Safety Quality Management Division provides support aiming to handle situations such as when a division in charge of self-checks covers a wide area in terms of skill maintenance or the geographic area they are responsible for. It continually shares and discusses results and problems to ensure good quality so that this initiative will not be reduced to a formality.
